LTREB Coarse Woody Debris

Variables
Variables (legacy):

Plot

  • Label:
  • Definition: The name of the forest stand (multi-hectare area, sampled by a group of plots located within it) that is used by the LTREB project or is otherwise familiar to UMBS researchers.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Date_sampled

  • Label:
  • Definition: Date when the particular tree was observed as part of a census. At a minimum, the year of the census; at best, the exact date.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

CWD_subplot_ID

  • Label:
  • Definition: Indicates which of the 3, 6mx6m subplots located in each LTREB 18m radius plot. As viewed from the plot center, subplots are located 6 m from plot center at compass headings of 0, 120, and 240 degrees. The innermost right-hand corner of each subplot is 6 m from plot center; thence, plots extend 6 m further out the transect.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Species_code

  • Label:
  • Definition: Four letter code for each species measured
  • Type: Code list
  • Codes:
    • Unknown = Species unknown, likely too decayed to tell
    • POGR = Populus grandidentata
    • ACRU = Acer rubrum
    • QURU = Quercus rubra
    • PIST = Pinus strobus
    • BEPA = Betula papyrifera
    • PIRE = Pinus resinosa
    • FAGR = Fagus grandifolia
    • TSCA = Tsuga canadensis
    • NA = Not available
  • Missing values: None specified

Status

  • Label:
  • Definition: If the tree measured was a stump or not
  • Type: Code list
  • Codes:
    • NA = Full tree (not a stump)
    • Stump = Stump of tree measured
    • Stump Piece = Part of tree stump measured
  • Missing values: None specified

Length_m

  • Label:
  • Definition: Length of the piece of CWD, in m. Lengths are either for the entire piece, if located entirely in the subplot, or for pieces that extend outside the subplot, the amount of length of the piece that is located within the subplot.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Endpoint_1_diameter_cm

  • Label:
  • Definition: Diameter, in cm, at one end of the piece of CWD. Measured to the nearest 0.1 cm using a caliper.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Midpoint_diameter_cm

  • Label:
  • Definition: Diameter, in cm, at the midpoint (center) of the piece of CWD. If the piece extends outside the subplot, this is the diameter at the midpoint relative to the portion of the piece that is within the subplot.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Endpoint_2_diamteter_cm

  • Label:
  • Definition: Diameter, in cm, at the other end of the piece of CWD. Measured to the nearest 0.1 cm using a caliper.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Decay_class_whole_piece

  • Label:
  • Definition: The observer’s assigned decay class of the whole piece of CWD (i.e., visually “averaged” to best represent the decay class of the whole piece even when it consists of portions of differing decay classes. Decay classes are numeric but categorical
  • Type: Code list
  • Codes:
    • 1 = Decay Class 1 - Recently downed material - tissue and bark intact throughout. Pine Stump- Decay Class 1- stump intact and possessing firm sapwood and heartwood
    • 2 = Decay Class 2 - Sapwood beginning to decay but completely present- Bark beginning to crack. Pine Stump- Decay Class 2- Sapwood intact, half or more of the total stump height still has heartwood
    • 3 = Decay Class 3 - Sapwood and bark mostly present-heartwood tissue intact. Pine Stump- Decay Class 3- Sapwood intact, less than half of the total stump height is full of heartwood (which is likely very soft)
    • 4 = Decay Class 4 - Sapwood and bark mostly gone with heartwood beginning to decay. Pine Stump- Decay Class 4- stump starting to lose its shape, heartwood soft and pieces of sapwood starting to break off and fall to the ground around stump (“stump pile”).
    • 5 = Decay Class 5 - Sapwood and bark gone-heartwood decay substantial-original shape spreading but still distinguishable from soil
  • Missing values: None specified

Avg_diameter_cm

  • Label:
  • Definition: The average diameter of the piece of CWD within the subplot, as computed from the three measured diameters.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Avg_radius_cm

  • Label:
  • Definition: Computed radius from computed diameter.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Avg_area_cm_squared

  • Label:
  • Definition: Calculated from diameter and length, with diameter taken as a representation of width (i.e., of a two-dimensional (flat) piece of CWD.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Density

  • Label:
  • Definition: The estimated specific density of CWD for that species X decay class. Estimated densities are based upon direct measurements of ACRU, BEPA, POGR, and QURU CWD across decay classes at UMBS~Flux AmeriFlux site in the late 1990s – early 2000’s; these data are available upon request.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Estimated_tapered_volume_cm_cubed

  • Label:
  • Definition: The computed volume based on the length and average diameter of the piece of CWD.
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified

Estimated_mass_tapered_g

  • Label:
  • Definition: The product of volume (cm^3) and density g (cm-3) for that piece of CWD
  • Type: Nominal
  • Missing values: None specified
