Abstract | I report here on a survey of the seed bank of an upland pine-hardwood succession sequence in northern lower Michigan. A comparison is made between the species composition of the seed bank and the above-ground vegetation. In particular, the seed bank and vegetation on one site was surveyed for three years following clear-cutting and fire. Thus, this study provides some understanding of the sources for recruitment into this newly disturbed site. This successional sequence is of special importance because it is one of the longest studied with an extensive longitudinal data base. This report updates and expands on previous studies (Scheiner & Teeri 1981, Cooper 1981). |
