Fresh Water Ice Nuclei

Project Abstract:
For rain to fall in temperate climates ice must form in the clouds. These particles are called ice nucleating particles (INP). We do not know what they are or where they come from but rivers have recently been shown to be a potential source. We will use the artificial stream facility to vary flow rates and build a variety of weirs and waterfalls to investigate the properties which affect the aerosolisation of these rain making particles.

Methods:
Using the artificial stream facility to build a variety of structures. We will then sample the air around the site for evidence of the INP. This will be done using vacuum pumps and filters and the INP will be enumerated on an ice spectrometer. (FCIS).
