Measurements of VOC concentrations and fluxes at PROPHET by high-resolution TOF-MS

Project Abstract:
We will deploy a high sensitivity, high resolution mass spectrometer (PTR-QiTOF) to measure concentrations and fluxes of a wide array of VOCs at the PROPHET tower as part of a broader field campaign planned for summer 2016. The measurements will allow us to measure the concentrations, emissions and deposition of the full suite of atmospheric organics detectable by proton-transfer, simultaneously across the full mass range. Results will contribute to a better understanding of reactive carbon exchange between the land and atmosphere. Our measurements will also be a valuable resource for other investigators in this PROPHET campaign aiming to investigate radical cycling, reactive nitrogen, carbon budgets, and other priority issues for the overall study.

Methods:
Methods will combine chemical measurements by PTR-QiTOF with atmospheric turbulence measurements by sonic anemometer. The mass spectrometer will be installed in the laboratory building at the base of the PROPHET tower to sample ambient air delivered by the manifold.
