Abstract
  1. A limnological examination, covering hydrography, physical chemistry and macroplankton, was made of 3 bog lakes on the upper tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan during the summers of 1927 to 1930 inclusive. Six additional bog lakes were studied for comparison. 2. It was found that, although some minor variations occurred, essentially the same species of macroplankton organisms which inhabit these northern Michigan bog lakes occur in the European bog lakes. 3. The acidic and basic bog lakes studied are qualitatively and quantitatively essentially alike in their macroplankton populations. 4. It has been shown that the peculiar absence of those macroplankton components which might be expected to occur, rather than the presence of certain forms is the feature which characterizes these northern bog lakes. 5. Only cosmopolitan relict and selection faunas are able to withstand the stringent conditions of these bog lakes. 6. Bog lakes can be understood best from the standpoint of their developmental history. Successions of marginal plant associations give rise to their respective peat profiles and to allochthonous bottom debris having characteristic reactions which are directly correlated with the developmental history and maturity of these lakes.
