In 1964 I attempted to categorize the highly variable subadult Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) plumages into groups which might be representative of age classes. My preliminary discussion was based on 18 specimens examined at the UMMZ and upon my 1961-1964 field observations. It seemed plausible that examination of a larger series of specimens would enable me to (a) describe each plumage group more precisely, (b) determine molt periods, (c) designate the extent of variation within each group, and (d) check on the occurrence of sexual or subspecific variation. Therefore, during 1965 I examined the subadult Bald Eagle (H. l. leucocephalus and H. L. alascanus) specimens at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), The Carnegie Museum (CM), Michigan State University Museum (MSU), Ohio State Museum (OSM), The US National Museum (USNM), and The University of Kansas Natural History Museum (KUMNH).
