Chemical Characterization of Gas/Aerosol-Phase Organics

Project Abstract: 
Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes represent a significant fraction of biogenic emissions, but their oxidation pathways and products are not well understood. Terpenes are among the most prevalent precursors of secondary organic aerosol in the atmosphere, so developing an understanding of their behavior in oxidizing conditions is key to understanding the composition of secondary organic aerosol in both remote and urban regions. We will conduct a series of measurements to characterize primary and oxidized organics in the gas and aerosol phase, with a focus monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and other prominent biogenic compounds in the C6-C30 range, for offline chemical analysis via gas and liquid chromatography with very high resolution tandem mass spectrometry.
