Archival of National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Soils

Project Abstract:
The primary purpose of this project is to incorporate soils collected from 47 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) terrestrial sites and analyzed by the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), into a community-accessible soil archive at UMBS. The archive serves as a stable long-term repository for soils that have been collected and analyzed at considerable cost and effort by UMBS and other researchers and that hold significant potential for future research. Soils held in the archive are cataloged into digital data repositories including those of UMBS and the International Soil Carbon Network (ISCN) and will be made available for discovery and use by other researchers through the ISCN (of which Nave was the longtime Network Coordinator). The project has a timeline of specified metrics that were negotiated with the direct sponsor, is subject to federal hygiene regulations specified by USDA-APHIS, and depends upon a research technician whose duration of employment is fixed.

Methods:
This project utilizes ultra-clean lab hygiene protocols specified in a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) too lengthy to be duplicated here. These protocols were required in order to obtain the relevant federal permits and are implemented during facility use in order to prevent exposure to or release of biological contaminants. The SOP containing these protocols is available on request.
