SWOT Analysis of Biosphere Reserves in there US

Project Abstract:
This project aims to evaluate the compliance of U.S. biosphere reserves with the Lima Action Plan's five strategic action areas, identify unique opportunities within these reserves, and assess which action items are being met. A preliminary checklist will be developed to inform upcoming periodic reviews. Focusing on the Champlain-Adirondack and Obtawaing Biosphere Reserves, this study will compare their initiatives to best practices in the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve (Germany) and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve (Canada). Utilizing SWOT analysis through stakeholder interviews, group discussions, and workshops, the project will identify critical strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The findings will provide actionable insights for enhancing U.S. biosphere reserves' strategic planning and compliance with the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme.

Methods:
A comprehensive SWOT analysis will be conducted. Key stakeholders, including founding individuals, existing Steering Committee Members, members from partner organizations, municipality leaders, and grassroots organizations, will be interviewed both individually and in groups. Data will be collected through in-person and virtual interviews, group discussions, and workshops, particularly during the EuroMAB 2024 conference. Founding documents, strategic plans, and periodic reviews will be examined in relation to the Lima Strategic Action Plan. The analysis will identify and prioritize strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, leading to the development of strategies that leverage strengths and opportunities while mitigating weaknesses and threats.
