Abstract | Suface seiches and currents were studied in Douglas Lake, Michigan. Over 93% of 150 drift bottles used to determine the surface currents were recovered. Eastward flow, highly correlated with prevailing west winds, dominated the current pattern during the study. The periodic responses of the lake were measured by a float gauge in a stilling well and computed theoretically by the Defant method of seiche analysis. The binodal seiche (T = 14.2 min measured, 13.6 computed) was the dominant mode. The pronounced convexity of the basin probably accounts for the absence of the uninodal period in the records. Bays of even considerable extent have little effect on seiche parameters. |
