More than 20 years have passed since the writer (1928a and b) demonstrated that certain schistosome cercariae of birds and mammals can penetrate the skin of man and produce a dermatitis characterized by papular eruptions. The information on schistosome dermatitis available up to 1935 has been summarized (Cort, 1936a and b), but since that time a great deal more has been added to our knowledge of this disease in numerous publications appearing both in this country and in other parts of the world. The number of species of schistosome cercariae known to produce this dermatitis has been very greatly increased. During this period, also, very signfiicant advances have been made toward a better understanding of the pathology, immunology and clinical course of schistosome dermatitis. Finally, widespread field studies have added much information on its epidemiology and distribution and have produced methods for its control. Therefore, it seems appropriate at this time to summarize the present status of knowledge on the whole subject of schistosome dermatitis.
