Abstract | Dicranum flagellare and D. montanum, both common (but the former more frequent) in northern Michigan, will produce protonemata from vegetative structures. In D. flagellare the scales from the flagellate branches were more productive than the leaves in which the cells of the alar region generated the largest number of protonemata. D. montanum has no scales, but new structures were produced in greatest numbers from the costal cells. In both species the proximal portions of the leaves were more effective propagules than the distal. Protonemata in all cases were initiated as bulging protuberances on a leaf-cell. The greater frequency of D. flagellare may be due to the presence of the highly reproductive scales of the flagellate branches in addition to the leaves. |
