Abstract | This study of pollen spectra from seven bryophytic polsters collected in Inverness Mud Lake Bog provides some guidance in the interpretation of pollen profiles from the region, especially with respect to NAP, when such more detailed pollen profiles are available. The regional vegetation indicators are the pollen of Pinus, Quercus, Fagus, Tsuga, Acer, Gramineae, and Compositae. Regional indicators which are influenced by local bog or swamp stands of the same entities are Picea, Betula, and Abies. Reliable indicators of local vegetation are Cyperaceae, Ericaceae, and Thuja; if one of these is present in the pollen spectrum, the contributing plants were growing essentially on that site. Other indicators of local vegetation are less reliable; if the pollen occurs in the spectrum, the contributing plants were probably within a few hundred yards of the depositing area. These include Larix, Thuja, Scheuchzeria, Epilobium, Potamogeton, Typha, Sparganium, Sarracenia, Drosera, Myriophyllum, Viburnum, Dryopteris thelypteris, and Sphagnum. Many other entities in the pollen spectra of these bryophytic polsters remain to be explained with respect to their representativeness. |
