Abstract | The grantee sought to determine the basis of a dietary shift observed in a population of garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) inhabitating High Island in northern Lake Michigan. Adult High Island snakes feed extensively on the nestlings of a colony of common terns (Sterna hirundo) in contrast to the rare occurrences of avian prey in mainland populations. These latter populations prefer prey such as earthworms and amphibians. |
