As considered here, this area comprises the three northern-most counties of the Lower Peninsula (Map 1), i.e., Emmet, Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties. This area if nearly 2,200 square miles, bordered on the west by Lake Michigan, on the north and east by the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Huron, and on the souuth by Charlevoix, Otsego, Montmorency and Alpena counties. The climax vegetation of the area consists mainly of Northern hardwood, Pine, and Conifer Bog and Swamp communities.
