In Michigan, Merlin (Falco columbarius) breeding records have come primarily from Isle Royale, with rare but regular reports from the Upper Peninsula (especially Keweenaw Co.). Breeding records for the lower Peninsula are even rarer: Michigan’s breeding brid atlas project reported only one confirmed (Antrim Co.) and two probable (Alpena Co.) breeding records. Binford (1991) suggests that since 1980 the Merlin population may be increasing and expanding in both peninsulas as it recovers from declines (1946-1972) associated with organochlorine contaminant-induced reproductive failure. The purpose of this note is to report a new breeding record for Emmet Co. that supports this hypothesized expansion in the Lower Peninsula.
