The effects on protozoan communities of periodic harvesting was studied with protozoa colonizing polyurethane substrates in the epilimnion of Douglas Lake, Michigan. Harvesting the substrates by squeezing almost always resulted in an increase in the number of species present when previously harvested substrates were compared with previously unharvested substrates. Thus the perturbation associated with harvesting increased the number of colonizing species.
