There are many kinds of water pollution, some more dramatic than others, but all having an undesirable impact on valuable water resources. In northern lower Michigan, the main source of pollution to lakes, rivers, and streams is nutrient enrichment. One of the predominant sources of nutrient enrichment to local waters comes from improperly treated household sewage. To encourage workable solutions to the problem of nutrient pollution, we’d like to present the following discussion of nutrient enrichment, how septic systems work, how their malfunction can affect water quality, and what new recommendations are being considered for the treatment of domestic wastes. Earnest, foresighted consideration of wastewater disposal problems by lakeside residents, local officials, and planners can help to maintain the high water quality of the economically, recreationally, and environmentally important inland lakes of northern lower Michigan.
