Abstract

The study of both individual and serial sections of the liver of five species of fishes indicates that the parenchyma of this organ consists of a series of sheets two cells thick. These sheets are perforated, tortuous, and anastomose frequently. This description is related to Elias’s conception of the vertebrate liver and shows an organization more primitive than that of mammals.
