Burt Lake, surrounded by rolling forested hills, broken by pastures, orchards, and farmlands, has long been a focal point for human development. Both year round residents and seasonal visitors are drawn to its shores to enjoy the beauty of the waters and the natural features of the countryside. The north shore has one of Michigan’s most unique wildlife sanctuaries, Reese’s Bog, where plants and animals normally found in the Canadian north abound. On the southern shore is the town of Indian River, the fastest growing community in Cheboygan County. A religious shrine, site of the world’s largest crucifix, as well as two public campgrounds and numerous other access points open the lake to abundant recreation and use.
