Abstract | We observed sapsucker nests during breeding seasons in 1989, 1990, and 1995. The purpose of this study was to examine sex differences in parental feeding effort in Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. In summary, we found that feeding effort in Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers can be more variable than has been previously reported. We know of only 3 published studies that report on parental feeding effort of nestlings, and these studies provide data on just 12 nests. Adding data from our 8 nests brings the total to only 20 nests. We therefore encourage more investigations into the feeding behavior of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers who are tending nestlings. |
